Periodontal Hygienists

The Difference Between a Periodontal Hygienist and a Dental Hygienist

You are likely familiar with the role of a dental hygienist. When you visit your regular dentist for a routine appointment, a dental hygienist will care for your teeth by carefully scraping off hardened plaque, then gently flossing between your teeth, and finishing off with a polish. If the dental hygienist notices signs of gum disease, they will measure the pockets in the gum that surround the teeth. When those pockets reach a certain depth, your dentist will refer you to the periodontist.

A periodontal hygienist typically works alongside a periodontist in a periodontal clinic, such as Okanagan Periodontics. He or she has specialized training and experience to clean teeth and gums with deep gum pockets and other gum disease symptoms. A periodontal cleaning, also called perio-maintenance, requires specific instruments for cleaning hardened plaque and calculus deep under the gumline. Periodontal hygienists are also trained to perform scaling and root planing, a periodontal procedure that cleans and removes plaque from the tops of the roots of your teeth. Scaling and root planning uses local anesthesia to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure.
